Making a mosaic is probably one of the easiest crafts to get started with. One of the main reasons for this is that there are really no rules when it comes to this art form. You can create mosaic works from a wide range of materials many of which can be picked up for free. Some examples being broken china, crockery, broken tiles, glass, shells, wood you name it. If you think of it you can probably use it!
The basic principles of the mosaic is to use small individual pieces (tiles or tesserae) of a material which are then glued to a surface such as wood or glass,in the shape of a predrawn design. The important part is to leave a gap between each of these glued pieces, this space is where a material called grout will be placed. Grout is like the material you have between wall tiles or floor tiles in your home, commonly it comes in white colors however you can get it in darker colors too (dark grout or black grout can often make a work of mosaic look really effective).
